The kicker at Marcos de Nizo High School in Tempe, Ariz., is a standout star on the varsity team, kicking for 67 points last season – with a 92 percent accuracy rate.
She also happens to be a girl.
Success didn’t come easy for Krysten Muir, 17, and neither did respect. In addition to the normal pressures of training hard and keeping her head in the game, Muir endures the extra scrutiny that comes with being different.
“A lot of people at school are like, ‘You’re the kicker?’ … ‘She’s only out here because her dad’s out here,’” Muir said of the criticism she faced from her fellow classmates.
