If you would stop measuring everyday it wouldn’t be so hot.
93 here in Miami!
We call it Thursday. A Thursday in July to be precise.
A heatwave is coming to a city near you…
SALAD DAYS
“It was indeed a mild winter,” answered Mr Nobody-in-particular, when talk of the weather entered the conversation about nothing in general but seemingly important at the time, as all in attendance supped their beer whilst leaning on the bar.
“The odd frost here and there, but not a sign of snow,” said Mrs So and So, amicably, reminding them of something they all already knew, but all nodded in mutual agreement just the same.
“April! brrr, nippy in the morning and cold most of the day!” Another authority on the worlds climactic conditions said before ordering another drink.
"And now this!" Someone else interceded in a mock, amazed tone.
All present shook their heads and grunted with a sound of learned, exasperated approval at the remark….
Well, the month started well enough. But as it progressed, a thick clammy mist hung over most cities and urban areas first thing in the mornings, only to be dispersed as the day went on, by the intense heat from the piercing rays of an angry sun, as the temperatures began to rise, 25C, 30C, 35C degrees.
By the time the last week of the month made an appearance, temperatures of 40C, 45C+ degrees, and climbing tested the integrity of various wall thermometers of those who possessed such.
Consequently, the heat was becoming unbearable for a significant number of people.
As the millions of air-conditioning units across the country started to suck the power grids dry, they caused such a surge that the power began to fail in numerous towns and cities.
A large amount of the population sat indoors sweating profusely while suffering in silence.
Meanwhile, almost imperceptibly at various locations, the death toll started to rise.
Still, most seemed not to notice as the odd ambulance 'increasingly' passed them in the street with sirens going, transporting the severely ill, heatstroke victim aged five or seventy-five to the various hospital.
They did not even notice when Mr Nobody in particular, and Mrs So and So, for that matter, started to rot in their various apartment, combi or house, after their bodies gave out due age, frailty, medical condition or other ailments, magnified with the stress of coping with the intense heat.
Any colour or ethnic prejudices they had held were, thanks to the workings of bodily bacteria, amalgamated in death, as their skin first turned green, then blue, and finally black.
These ‘failings’ of the human body's temperature regulatory system were more prevalent for those in the cities. The stifling heat hanging heavily over the large built-up areas of the 'urban islands' of concrete, steel, and glass, holding the heat just as the bricks in a storage radiator do, leaving dwellings and offices alike, just as hot at night, as during the day, with temperatures +5 degrees above outlying areas, slowly baking their respective inhabitants.
By the end of the month, the health services were not the only service overwhelmed as the fire and police services strived to keep order amidst an increasingly hot and aggravated population.
Meanwhile, due to chronic organ failure, well, that and the air-conditioning failure due to the overloaded power lines; the rotting maggoty bodies of Mr Nobody in particular, and Mrs So and so, and such like decided to spread their wings so to speak.
As swarms of flies infested every household, office, structure, and open space, they introduced various diseases for the younger, fitter population to digest via their 'tainted' ice-cold latte's, salads, lemonades, etc.
By the last day of the month, a significant proportion of society was dead, dying, or bloated out of all proportion, ready to burst.
But seeing as most stories have a happy ending…
The single-use coffee cup and plastic stirrer, along with the plastic carrier, had finally stopped, thus saving the leather-backed turtle far out in the Pacific from an ignominious fate.
