As extreme drought and climate change create explosive conditions in the West, the Biden administration is investing billions into a 10-year plan to fight wildfires before they start. The plan calls for prescribed burns in fire-prone regions to reduce fuel. The federal government wants families to manage their own forests before fire season begins, but conducting those prescribed burns isn’t cheap or easy.

We are already doing this via the USFS, they cut very large fire breaks as well as clear out excessive native fuel (grasses, shrubs, etc.) where it's accessible. The problem is getting large equipment down rocky dirt roads in wilderness areas, it's extremely difficult without Forest Service roads being available. Cut taxes & we lose maintenance on trails & the very roads you need to fight fire.
Clearing Land and cutting down more trees with make Climate Change worse. We are turning the West into a Desert because we keep clearing land.
The natives of California used to have controlled burns to help their environment. When whites came to mine
gold and formed a government they made those burns illegal so prospectors and miners weren't inconvenienced.

Excuse me, I'm in New Mexico where much of our state was consumed by wildfires. How did they start? After several days of SEVERE FIRE ALERT warnings from the National Weather Service our department of Foresty continued with their plans for prescribed burns! Single Digit humidity compounded with 20 ft. winds 35-50 mph with gusts up to 75 mph! Yep- you've got it these fires are very difficult to contain. No prescribed burns-Listen to Smokey! Use controlled sheep and goat grazing! This destruction is so unnecessary!
Good protection
I feel constantly mixed hearing a report like this. I don't want a single one of these trees to go. If anything America needs to triple over the amount of trees it has, but while planting in other areas IS NEEDED it seems like thinning out these already grown areas might be the only option. That and reintroducing more native animals to the areas they themselves used to manage.
