My father was in a car vs pedestrian accident at age 85. Hit while walking across the cross-walk, he flew up onto the hood and banged his head on the windshield. Other than being sore and bruised, he was OK. So it seemed. A few weeks after getting out of the hospital, he had to return because he was having a hard time balancing, talking, sleeping etc. The diagnosis was a subdural hematoma – bleeding in his brain. He had immediate surgery, and they put in a stent to drain the blood. He recovered from the surgery, but each time they tried to remove the stent, he'd start to bleed again. Eventually after 3 surgeries, he was able to leave the hospital, but he was never the same. Too much brain damage. He could not remember anything he did or said or what anyone told him for very long. He died a year later.
He had been taking baby aspirin for years, even though he wasn't a cardiovascular or cancer risk, and I believe the aspirin was a big contributor to not only the initial brain bleed, but also the bleeding reoccurrences.
