Every war is about grabbing more land and/or resources. Anyone that studies martial arts or any type of hand-to-hand combat will tell you that your best defence is to walk or run away from a fight. It always takes two to tango. People in power want to remain in control because it best suits them for their goals of power and wealth. As much as everyone praises your president as hero, you should consider that perhaps he is no better than Putin. Like Putin, President Zelenskyy would rather clinch onto his position of power, than to use diplomatic solutions to save his own people. And don't believe the narrative the the Russians are untrustworthy for the reasons he could not negotiate because it has nothing to do it. The Russian government is untrustworthy, but that is not the the problem…
If your main concern was to save your people from being slaughtered and to save your country from being demolished to rubble, then the wise thing to do would be to step down and resign from office. He could have resigned, "under duress" giving an hour long speech in front of the news cameras about how he was forced into letting a Russian puppet president take control of the country. It would have saved your entire country and countless lives from disaster. After resigning under pressure, he could have sought the very same sanctions we see today against Russia's interfere in you country's affairs.
Both the puppet president and Putin's government would be under international sanctions until they restore his presidency. But instead, your president would rather plunge his entire country into a war because clinching onto the straws of power is more important than saving his country from disaster. Not to mention, his net worth has nearly doubled since the war began. He is personally holding a massive reserve of U.S. dollars and bitcoins as part of the West's aid packages to Ukraine. Perhaps 75% was distributed for defence purposes, but we are talking about 100s of billions. Don't forget war is big business! Putin and Zelenskyy both are equally responsible for this mess; they are very similar in being cold and calculated with very selfish goals in mind. Two peas in the same pod. They also hate one another with a personal grudge weighing heavily on their motives. Both presidents think they're in some type of chess match; but they are playing with real people's lives.

US is the last state wishing Russia to be collapsed. The most important goal for US in Europe is to maintain the existence of NATO, and once Russia is destroyed, the NATO is no longer needed, and Europe would be free from US control.
