Everything we use on a daily basis comes from fossil fuels. The Oil produced in US is a light distillate and sweet crude which is a lot cleaner than imports. Imports from countries that produce a heavy crude are high in sulfur. The oil is cheaper per barrel but is more expensive to refine. The bottom line people is we can survive without fossil fuels.
The car industry is already naturally going towards more efficient forms of transportation whether they be piston-driven gasoline burners or electric cars they're becoming extremely efficient you have to allow it to happen naturally because the economy doesn't have space for this contraction.
