Using CNN as an educational source is like using John Gacy as a clown at your kids bday party.
Even in 2015, my high school english teacher was saying fox news or any fox affiliated news station was all unreliable for a report I did on social media impact on mental health. I had multiple sources on this paper, but the inclusion of a Fox news article that said the same things as other news orgs made it "bad" info.

The real question isn't why CNN was made mandatory…it's why there was any form of media broadcasts allowed to pupils in the first place. There is no place for it in school other than if an emergency situation is taking place etc. Other than that, pupils should be kept clear of any media bias & indoctrination.
They announced a switch to the Cartoon Network, no change in content or quality is expected.
Airports and Hospitals are next. Only audience CNN has had in years has been captive with no remote to change the channel.

For a brief time my high school had a mandatory watching for some program I don't remember the name of that wasn't CNN. It was similar enough that it was banned. I'm glad it didn't last long.
