Two mountain climbers were saved by rescuers after an incident at California’s popular destination, Mount Shasta. One woman was killed before the rescue operation was launched.

At least one of them died.
The accidents are due to 'ice chutes', a well know condition in Southern California. The surface of the snow melts by day, freezes at night. If you lose your footing and slip, it is often impossible to stop sliding. In a steep chute, you accelerate to dangerous speeds, impact with any object sticking up from the ice/snow is devastating.
If a 'guide' loses clients on Shasta in an ice chute, the guide was, quite simply, unprepared/unqualified to be there in existing conditions.
At MINIMUM, all climbers carry ice axes, and have been taught how to use them. When crossing chutes, there should be a static belayer who is on stable footing, better yet anchored. Proper boots and even crampons should be worn. 'Roping together' and all entering the chute is folly. This accident is graphic evidence.
I'm a 'casual climber' – I simply don't go when it's stupid to be there. Too many people plan a vacation/ book a climb and want to go 'in the time slot booked'. A recipe for disaster if you are not skilled and/or properly protected.
You can drive to 14K' in Hawaii.
Do the people who get rescued get billed?
