I was on the crew that built the first 10 F18 Prototypes for Northrop at the Hawthorne California plant in 1978. All great people on that crew. None of us knew then that the F18 would still be in service as a great Aircraft over 4 DECADES later. Haven't seen any of those guys in the last 30 years, but am sure they are proud too.

During WW II it is the beginning of the era of the AIRCRAFT CARRIERS. But now it is the era of the MULTI-ARMORED ship with high cyclic rate anti-missile cannons and guns and missiles and anti-cavitation torpedoes against submarines and surface to surface anti-ship missiles. And complete with DECENTRALIZED systems alongside with centralized systems. And designed with 15 to 16 crosswise watertight bulkheads from bottom to top deck and with 6 to 7 lengthwise watertight bulkheads from bottom to top deck. Each room and each corridor section equipped with fire foam extinguishers-sprayers.
If the Russian cruiser Moskva can be sunk by a drone so can this $6 billion dollar aircraft carrier. Quickly becoming obsolete.

When I was in the Navy in the 70's the Russians hadn't quite figured out how to do under replenishment (UNREP) so they was always a Russian ship following us to figure out how we did it. At the time they would have to go into a safe harbor to refuel or replenish supplies and they refueled anchored and in tandem, i.e., the fuel line is passed from fantail to bow. I don't know how they replenished supplies; probably by small boat.
We also passed personnel ship to ship this same way; like on Sundays the chaplains would come aboard on a high chair this way. If they were lucky they'd came across dry.
The Nimitz class carriers aren't even as powerful as our Gerald Ford class of carriers.

The Chinese are able now to pinpoint US carriers sailing anywhere in the world via their satelite systems. Combine that with hypersonic missles, with 2500 mile range, (fighters range is under 500 miles ) and it becomes apparent 6K men and a 6-13 Billion dollar singular vessel could all perish in a moments time. The Navy /DOD should find a way to protect our sailors and second put 13 Billion dollars to use address the new technolgy of the 21st century vs the 100 yr old carrier system.

For your information, the Royal Navy first carried out ship-to-ship re-supply around 1870. I believe the USA conducted trials some 20 years later.
