Ukrainian Government could simply issue as many citizenships to all mercenaries who were caught by its enemy, resulted in a mess. Am sure it’s enemy would have ways to verify the citizenships of those mercenaries, one of the mercenaries pleaded to Uk government instead of Ukrainian’s, clearly spoke for itself that he is a British citizen. Apart from politicians and oligarchs who have vested interest, civilians do need peace and safety, most would put safety and peace before ‘pride’ and losing more lives.
