I really don't understand how staffing shortages are causing cancelled flights. It would seem me that staffing shortages would cause for fewer flights to be sold and for those flights to be potentially more expensive. Were the airlines just hoping extra staff would magically appear when they sold the flight?

Airlines don't make a profit with public customers. That's just a front for subsidizing fuel for the military.
If they're having tough finances, as the military uses fuel in the Ukraine, cutting back on flights is the easiest.
It’s best not to plan a trip during any holiday. Being stuck in an airport is not worth it.
