I feel very sad for her and hope she will get out soon (although my hopes are low). As someone who has studied law for ages and is specialized in human rights, this comments make me sick though.
First of all, there is no functioning, impartial judiciary in Russia, but a system full of corruption. As we are talking about a dictatorship, it is also clear that there is no separation of powers and decisions are more often than not political motivated. Hence, we cannot know if the allegations are true.
Secondly, there have been almost no procedural guarantees and there probably is a violation of human rights. She has been there for 4 months with no possibility to reach someone from her family. Moreover, penalties should be proportionate. 10 years of prison for having carried a ridiculously small amount of cannabis products is a joke. That all leads to the conclusion that the whole process is far from being fair.
Thirdly, she has a right to diplomatic help and the US have the right to offer that help. The fact that she was criticizing the US (which was also her right) does not change anything.
It is just ridiculous. what some people write on the Internet, without having any knowledge about the topic. It is also very funny that most of these people support Trump, a real criminal, who tried to form a coup. His supporters, whilst screaming that everyone is equal before the law, come up with excuses for every single time he broke a rule, such as tax evasion and worse. I cannot believe it.

You can't even bring hashish oil over the Border from Washington state into Canada., the Canadian border officials will stop you on the spot during inspection and either it will be confiscated or destroyed. If you can't bring a substance that is considered illegal to transfer across borders between the United States and Canada what makes you think you can get away with the same thing taking hashish oil from the United States to Russia which has some of the harshest penalties for doing that on the planet? The Department of State has a website with information which tells you what is allowed and what is not allowed under the law of the country you are going to visit, and what they can do and cannot do if you get in trouble. And if you're too busy or stupid to check that information prior to when you leave.. don't be surprised at what happens. She is an experienced traveler has been to Russia many times so she can't cry I didn't know.. at the end of the day she got caught dirty, it is that cut and dried. This is not about racism or sexism.. she did something she wasn't supposed to do and she got caught , so now she has to pay for it. Same as the average traveler caught in the same situation, irregardless of who they are going through Russian customs. She was trying to use her status as a elite athlete, and the Russian authorities didn't buy it.
