In my experience, which includes but is not limited to Boston, NYC, LA, Tokyo, South Korea, and Beijing, mass transit systems always have a "Poor People Line." In Boston that's the orange, in NYC it's the 7 and Q. Trust fund hipsters don't live on these lines, immigrants do. They are as physically institutionalized as racism and classism get.
Boston is going the same road as NYC did long ago, where the priviledged are catered to, and the rest are expected to support that as "growth."
The praise of NYC's transit system is completely wrong. What he's saying is true in Manhattan, but most New Yorkers live in NOT MANHATTAN. Just because most residents, visitors, and tourists ride in, or in and out of Manhattan doesn't mean that how the trains work in Manhattan is at all representative of a system that works, because it freakin' doesn't. If you want to see a public transit system in the United States that works, that's Los Angeles; the others are total crap, particularly NYC.
