The Justice Department went to a judge, demonstrated probable cause, obtained a search warrant, and searched a private citizens home. That is what the FBI does when there is probable cause that a crime has occurred. The former President is a citizen like anyone else. They can't tell you everything since it can effect the criminal investigation. What we do know is that 11 sets of classified documents were taken, 4 of which were labeled top secret. The DOJ will complete their investigation and if a crime has been committed, Trump should be charged and prosecuted. At a minimum he had no right to retain these records. It's also possible that retaining these records could be a crime under the Espionage Act. The DOJ does not need to provide anyone information that has been accumulated as part of their investigation until Trump is charged and goes to trial. They will likely negotiate with Trump's lawyers behind the scene, just as they often do when prosecuting a criminal. Everything else is just a distraction. If Trump didn't reveal the search, DOJ would have probably never unsealed the search warrant and list of property taken.
