A 63-year-old woman was struck and killed by a flying umbrella at a South Carolina Beach. NBC News’ Julie Tsirkin has more on the story including an important message regarding beach safety.

Such a tragedy. Definition of act of God. Nature playing lawn darts. All the times I've been to the beach and this NEVER crossed my mind. How many people have actually died from this?? The number looked high, but it was out of multi millions of people at the beaches over time.
The point of the umbrella 🏖️ should be made out of rubber? 😁
I worked in cancun they have to have weighed base and screw into the umbrella.

Why not putting plastic container filled with water at the feet of the umbrella? so the umbrellas are still easy for transportation, but safe not to fly around.

Beach Bum umbrellas! They don’t go flying because they come with literal sand-filled flaps that firmly keep the umbrella anchored.

It seems convenient to spear them into the sand like that, but having them anchored is just going to have to be mandatory.

UMBRELLA corporations always developing all sorts of Bio Weapons.
We've seen so many bouncy houses take flight with such horrific results so we should know by now that wind can be tricky. I never would have imagined that these umbrellas have vampire stakes on the ends. I knew it couldn't anchor like my patio umbrellas but I was not expecting the tapered point. Condolences to those who loved her. Sounds like she'll be greatly missed.

The purpose of a beach umbrella is to guard against the sun. What if the sun is opposite from the wind direction?

At the end, when they are demonstrating the proper procedures, there is an umbrella in the background pointed in the wrong direction and it's about to blow away.
This is just as crazy as the woman carrying a drink with a metal straw that tripped and fell and the metal straw went through her eye into her brain killing her!
Can't they dig holes, put post into concrete holders. Cover poles in the concrete so only few inches are above ground. Chain posts so they can't blow away.
