They didn’t mean to kill him
These officers did perform their duties with a commendable degree of professionalism and compassion. Unfortunately however, placing someone in a face-down prone position is very bad for people with certain health issues. And since a cop is not a doctor and can't possibly know who is suffering from what issue, this should never be done to anyone for more time than it takes to get the cuffs on. It should be policy that a person is physically rolled onto their side or brought to a seated position immediately after a take down, whether or not they ask for it as they might not be able to ask for it. Didn't we learn anything from the George Floyd fiasco?
Cops need some kind of rope to tie suspects up with in a seated position so they can’t get up. The facedown with multple full grown people on you always seems inherently dangerous. Anyone who’s grappled how crushing and hard to breathe it is to have someone on top of you. Can’t imagine having several. But most impotantly, cops need regular grappling training so they know what to do and what not to do.
So who follows his mental health issues? Are they culpable here? Maybe they should be pressured/accused as the police always are. You second guessing monday morning quarterbacks can just shut up. A sorry day all around but DO NOT lay this at the feet of the police. They cannot possibly know his health status and acted entirely appropriate given the situation. Reaching for the gun and fighting them sealed his rough handling – I'd say the officers were quite restrained given him trying to get their guns.
