Investigating Claims That Oximeters Give Inaccurate Readings To Patients With Darker Skin

Oximeters measure oxygen levels in blood, but critics say if you’re a person of color, the device may be assessing your levels incorrectly. NBC News’ Zinhle Essamuah speaks to Ph.D. students who are working to develop new technologies to calibrate for differences in skin tones.

  1. Some times I see things. Not over there but right behind you.

  2. It slithers in, takes a nap slithers out.

  3. Sinai Hospital is a Nazi stronghold

  4. This makes no sense. If Anything black and browns have a advantage and are getting treated faster. The Oximeter reads the amount of light received on the other side. Therefore if Red Blood Cells Absorb light and so does Melanin (Skin Color) then your SpO2 reading should be less because there is less light on the receiving end therefore getting you treated faster.

  5. I just bought one, I don’t t really like it. It just stresses me out. I’m returning it.

  6. More way-ist propaganda LeChimp.

  7. I wonder if this has any correlation with Covid deaths related to ventilators 🤔. I smell a class action 😑

  8. All doctors seem suspect now and any break through of anything in medicine now I would steer clear from there culling the populous

  9. Are shinnanagins afoot 🤔

  10. Another attack on people born with white

  11. Bless their hearts thank you guys for creating the check your oxygen levels❤🎉

  12. Scientists of color, lol
Just force light skin people to put on lotion tan before using it.

  13. So, now oximeters are racist? Will it ever stop?

  14. Covid killed more black people because they're all fat & smoke not bc of racist oxygen meters.

  15. Lmao so oxygenreaders are racist

  16. Now that I think about it a little more…..
The inventor of that device has an unusually deep voice.

  17. It'll be over before you know it.

  18. What about Asian. My dad was Asian hes dead now not saying this was the cause but maybe played a role? He was south koren

  19. Okay, so it's faulty. Fix it and move on from this obsession about race.

  20. You’re putting too much trust in a machine when you can use your eyes and notice fingernails are all pink and when someone is hypoxic you’re looking for blue under the nails, eyes, and the lips.

  21. Hmmm … Oxygenated blood is bright red, return blood is blue/bluish (darker).
Wouldn't the machine mistake dark skin for dark blood?
It seems like dark skin would lead to lower oxygen readings, not higher ones.
(And for that matter, is the machine accurate for anybody at all?)

  22. Well this explains why my oxygen looks good even when I'm dizzy during an asthma attack. I always thought it was because I was overly sensitive to metabolic changes. Could be both.

  23. Oh no racist devices 🇵🇷🇵🇷🤪🤪
