Looking around at the data, it seems the NHC may have greatly exaggerated the strength of the storm. You cannot find reports of a wind gust that was anywhere near what the NHC claims was the maximum sustained winds. That is typical for almost every storm. It used to be that surface winds were estimated to be something like 70-90% of flight level winds depending on the storm. The NHC used Andrew as an excuse to make it a flat 90%. Since then, their reports have been mostly unreliable. The NHC claimed the storm had sustained winds of 155. Find a reported wind gust over 130. Clearly this 90% rule needs to be dumped and the NHC needs to go back to using science instead of taking shortcuts. I'd like to see the NWS do the same with their phony severe thunderstorm warnings. You cry wolf enough, people are going to start ignoring the warnings.
