Even me that live in bali follow the news about hurricane ian long before it landed on Florida. There's live on youtube days before the landfall where the authorities give direction 24/7. It's just the people that underestimate the situation. Please don't blame the authorities

They told them to leave more than 48 hours before…come on you're an adult living in FL, you have hurricanes every year, you can and should expect that one hurricane just might be worse than another; when they tell you to leave..board up, pack up some clothes, important papers, your meds, important items, call relatives/friends and go…instead of trying to blame others because you stayed, not cool.
They don't need a bunch of talk the people need money, food, water, and gas.
People shouldn’t wait to be told to leave. Personal responsibility it’s necessary in all things.

you choose to live in a place like Florida, or New Orleans, or Houston. You choose to live in a place with storms like this. I know it's hard to move for the older generations. But we live in a very mobile society now. We know these storms produce mass destruction. You know the pros and cons. If you aren't willing to take the risk, don't live there. I know that sounds careless. My sister in law and brother in law CHOOSE to uproot themselves from the comfort of Indiana to permanently live in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, from just a few weeks after it until this very day, and every season I go through this. I go through it asking myself, why on earth do they live there?! They've built a community there now. I can't stand the humidity there when I visit, no matter time of year it is. It's not for me. I couldn't take the risk of losing my valuables, and my parents' valuables as I am the keeper of the heirlooms. And now that my sister has moved from New Hampshire to Houston, I have to ask myself the same question, why Houston? Why in the path of hurricanes? Now I have to worry about her? And we have TONS of friends and family that live in every major community in Florida. But why? I have never understood it. I am a woman of the north, give me a good old decent snowstorm any day of the week. I'd rather risk a few days snowed in than the devestating lost of everything from a hurricane or tornadoes in Oklahoma. So, I'm not heartless. You know the risks. Stop acting like it will never happen to you. How many times has Florida been hit? I remember the photos from Hurricane Andrew. I pray for and send money to charities that will help you, but I wish you would stop acting like this is all new information. Sigh.

wood frame homes and modular NEED TO BE OUTLAWED here in Florida. As a Floridian homeowner in a concrete block home I feel a bit safer. Yet stick built homes just have no chance. It’s time they CHANGE homes here. ASAP
This is just the beginning of hurricane season. Florida is expected to be hit by at least 2 more hurricanes before the season is over.

They want to question the evacuation timeline because it’s a popular Governor who is running for President. They’re trying to knock him down, because he will destroy any Democratic candidate. There are never questions when the Governor is a Democrat.
It is baffling to me that the local people, media,, govt,, etc are saying only a couple hundred perished in Ian. I was there and unless EVERYONE EVACUATED, thousands perished. Do not think we will ever know the truth since the truth does not matter anymore, only positive spin.

I evacuated from Sanibel 42 years ago! No one had to tell me to leave after I had lived there for a year and realized what it meant to face a hurricane on a barrier island. Bye!

This may be taken harsh but the fact of the matter is. the people knew the hurricane was coming, they made a choice to ride it out despite knowing it was predicted to be a strong storm. And the reality is..they simply had no idea what sort of storm even a category 1 could be. Nor did they fully take into account the predicted storm surge. Now. it must be said that i too rode out many hurricanes and living on the gulf coast. sarasota and clearwater, having experienced several strong tropical storms, i wouldve know full well to get out of town with anything above that of a tropical storm. that region is far too on the nose of sea level not to be vastly effected by storm surge. And what we've seen in Ft. Myers is applicable to everything on the west gulf coast of florida. People simply didnt take it seriously. And ironically understandably, because no storm since those in the 80's was so devastating to a Floridian coastal city. Their is no more Ft. Myers beach. And to make matters worse, the fallout from the water surge having cause the Myakka and Peace rivers to flood and break their dikes and levy's the flooding of vast parts of Arcadia is also a major loss in live. thousands of trailer homes completely submerged. The news isnt covering this nearly as much as Ft. myers. People when such storms come, if your having issues about leaving your valuables behind then your really someone that has taken the owning of things over the value of ones own life.
