If we are going to all-electric vehicles in the future then why not dig up all the oil now to use until we're ready? The infrastructure is not ready! and neither are our pockets!
If all the people who whine about "climate change" were actually serious about it then they should be making moves to heavily invest into research and development of fusion technology and to find better ways to use nuclear that we already have. Not to mention energy storage, which is not that great with current technology. I can see fusion solving all our energy problems, maybe not in my lifetime but someday.
We can't do it because nobody wants it enough to wait for inventions to catch up with ideas. Republicans are on the defense while still trying to maintain the same old tired power model for their party. The dems don't want to wait because their time to seize all the power and control will be over if they allow the green technology to actually replace the fossil fuel technology without force! Teslas are NOT the best vehicles in the world… Their production quality is terrible compared to Lexus or Toyota… That said, Tesla's quality has improved, and I suspect it will continue to do so, but it's going to take years, if it even happens, for them to reach toyota/lexus build quality…
