Putin never threatened to break with the decades old Russian nuclear weapons usage doctrine, he has only reiterated it as a reminder to warn the west not to escalate beyond the point of no return. Western media invented the threat from an inability to understand sentences within their given context, and used said invention to prove that Russia bluffs about his warning (which we like to call a threat). The danger in this is that it seems like the west is saying that Russia nuclear weapons doctrine is a bluff, that Russia wouldn't even use nuclear weapons even if one is used on them or if facing a conventional military defeat (that is the nuclear doctrine they have had for decades, that is the doctrine that western media has called a bluff for weeks now, and politicians in the west might start to believe this fallible Erasmus Montanus deduction and decide to invade Russia or even use nuclear weapons first. The US has never ruled out first strike, on the contrary, the US has multiple times stated that first strike is always on the table).
Go back and reinterpret Putin's so called first strike threat; it doesn't exist. A case of overly eager russophobe pundits has overinterpreted and put what they expected and wanted to hear into his mouth.
The same happened before the bombing of Libya, Ghadaffi expressed that violent extremism would not be tolerated and the west interpreted that sentiment to mean that he would massacre the civilian population.
