The Department of Energy is expected to announce tomorrow that researchers at the Lawrence Livermore National Lab in California have used lasers to produce a nuclear fusion reaction that creates energy. IF is the biggest little word in the language. no climate scenario has ever taken into account the massive exponential release of methane and other greenhouse gases from the melting permafrost that covers 1/4 of the earth. It's unstoppable at this point and will invariably lead to temperatures akin to those on Venus before fusion technology can possibly help.

All good until a speaker claims this could eliminate fossil fuels immediately and forever! With more than 33% of the world's human population entirely dependent upon artificial fertilizers what happens when those suddenly become unavailable? With such a finite supply of lithium and cobalt, what will happen to current battery-powered electric vehicles? How will we be able to transport food, specifically vegetables and fruit to the higher latitude cities in winter when battery-powered truck driving range is reduced by 60% in very cold winter conditions?
We will still need a multitude of newer generation fission SMRs and microreactors to produce the hydrogen required for vehicles powered by fuel cells. Even electric prop-driven aircraft are restricted to a lower ceiling altitude such that jet fuel for jet engine aircraft will remain critical for another hundred years…….
I truly hate it when the LUDDITE mainstream news media misleads the publicly so severely.
