I wonder if this has any connection to the tens of thousands of power outages in Oahu this morning. Possibly the same weather system caused both the outages and the turbulence.
Because of the way a plane is built and maintained, coupled with the properties of fluid dynamics, it's almost impossible for a place, maintained properly, to crash from turbulence, even if it's incredibly severe.
