Short memories of you all. He headed the Vatican Bank for years. He was ultra conservative and wanted to turn back Catholic protocol and theology to pre- Vatican one. 1950 style. Rejected women’s role in church for anything. He was powerful cardinal in College of Cardinals and fought off censorship for Church sex scandal of the 70s and 80s. Even worse, he oversaw the Vatican Bank like a banker would that was rife with money laundering with the Italian Mafia. It prompted a military assault one night that shut the electric down in the Vatican for 3 days as arrests were made. And gee, guess what came next, he resigned due to poor health, and lived in a summer house inside the Vatican for the past decade. Never left the Vatican again. Since Vatican is regarded as a separate county, the authorities couldn’t touch him. And he had his buddies protecting his back. So much for corruption in the Catholic Church. The Inquisition was bad enough. Now with a sex scandal that was ignored for decades and massive money laundering with the Mafia. What scandal came next? The cover up? That’s how I’ll remember this man. I am a former Catholic who left the church because of immoral people like this.
