Are car touchscreens distracting drivers?

With touchscreens now in 99% of new cars, researchers are studying whether they are distracting drivers and putting people at risk. NBC’s Dasha Burns went inside a massive simulator at the University of Iowa to put that question to the test. Is she able to work with the touch screens and keep her eyes on the road?

  1. absolutely, with sliding levers and knobs you can control functions by feel with out ever taking eyes of the road. with touch screens you have to look.

  2. I miss the old cars , just a plain old stereo and a steering wheel. All this does is make it impossibly expensive to fix if any little thing breaks or malfunctions. I also miss the old do it yourself windows that you manually roll up or down. My car now , if I change out the battery I have to have a 5 digit code or the radio system wont work at all. I got it used but thankfully the previous owner wrote it down in the manual or I'd never be able to work it at all, ever. Too much technology in a device that really doesnt need it.

  3. They should put a button on the steering wheel that you can tell it what address you want to it can figure it out kind of like IAM using this talk to text software for this post

  4. or just don't look at the screen while driving

  5. Does one plus one equal two? Duh.

  6. Some things NEED to remain analog. Climate controls are at the top of that list.

  7. My Ford won’t let you use the search button in the navigation until I’m stopped at a stop sign or red light. The second your foot comes off the brake pedal it shuts the option off to type in the search area.

  8. Safest way is to navigate using voice commands?

    Oops something went wrong.

  9. A nice balance of nobs and touch screen is nice

  10. Do we really have to question this? There are so many reasons having hands free on mobile devices became mainstream for drivers everywhere. Unless you have a passenger to handle touch navigation it is instantly dangerous unless you are at a complete stand still during stop lights. How many of us can say, no matter how cautious we otherwise drive that we aren't tempted to glance at gps, even with voice recognition to guide it for us? If we are going to go this route for vehicle functionality voice operation and assisted keypad input on the steering wheel with quick nav functions need to be present as well so there is minimal need to glance away from the road at any time.

  11. This is why I like the older cars that let me feel that I’m actually driving.

  12. Better question: Are LCD displays distracting? Yes. There's something mesmerizing about the glowing LCD display panel that draws the eyes to it. I've stared at LCD displays for hours on end – doing and accomplishing nothing only to realize that is exactly what has happened.

  13. Looks like NBC is running out of content

  14. Teslas have autopilot, so you can initiate it and navigate to a new destination

  15. duh, why have a 8" screen when you could have a tablet, that plays games, and you can social media on it, while it drives itself.

  16. Instead of mentioning how long her eyes are off of the road they should be saying how much ground they covered while not looking

  17. I have no idea how so much stupidity got so far

  18. so that is saying i can mount my tablet on the dash and use it…

  19. Give me the knob! Touch screen takes away my attention way too much.

  20. UK study says yes… Get rid of them…

  21. …they needed a study to verify this?…

  22. I'm sorry but my brand new truck has a feature on it where I cannot use my touch screen while my vehicle is in drive….why don't all the new vehicles have that feature? If mine came with it….

  23. I'm keeping my pre-touchscreen vehicle until the wheels fall off.

  24. Hmm lets have billion dollar study to discern if you take your eye from the road your car may veer.

  25. Time to ban them and recall existing vehicles with the touch screens with buttons. And massive fines against automakers anytime someone is killed or injured by their dangerous vehicles.

  26. I don't need to drive anymore. So luckily I never dealt with any of this tech.

  27. People in general are not good drivers even without distractions from phones and dash touch screens. Let’s be real.

  28. You can just push a button and speak the address

  29. Duh? Lol if a tiny phone screen is then i think a large tablet in your dash also will?

  30. My sister typically drives with a BlueTooth blaring in her ear, kids screaming in the back seat, a barking dog running all over the car, occasional surreptitious and illegal glances at text messages on her phone, all the while wrangling with her touchscreen GPS. I refuse to ride with her. She's a five-car pileup waiting to happen.

  31. I don’t see much difference between car screens n phones- both distract. Don’t know why this would be installed

  32. Not any more than cell phones.

  33. Another thing Democrats want to ban.

  34. Of course they distract drivers. It’s like asking if sea water tastes salty.

  35. There's a good reason why those textured buttons and dials exist in the first place.

  36. This doesn’t sound like breaking news. Even the old style GPS that garmin used to and still provides gives you a warning, it is obviously to not use the touch screen while driving, it’s the same thing with texting while driving. These researchers are researching only what impaired drivers do. Not regular drivers.

  37. Don't talk and text.. oh but here's a giant screen for you to fiddle around with. We've added in a bunch of safely features so you don't have to worry about it.. Only the less fortunate have those problems 😉🤦

  38. Yes Touch Screens Are Severly Distracting All Drivers, However Soon All Cars Will Be 100% Self Drive and No Steering Wheel on Most.

  39. Texting and driving is dangerous!

    Cops use:
    Radio
    Radar
    Dashcam
    Laptop

  40. Complex panels touch screen action, or ones far from dashboard sight, should be considered not safe driving, while the vehicle is not substituting autonomous role.

  41. Gotta be in the top 10 'no sh*t Sherlock questions

  42. I always wondered if automobile interior designers drive the cars that they design!

  43. Back in my day we kept a map folded in the glove box, smoked a pipe, and drove a 1983 Volvo 240 perfectly safe automobile
