As I watch the continuing coverage of the death of Tyre Nichols, I keep hearing the same question – "How do we change policing so we can avoid these tragedies in the future?"
The answers provided by politicians, police officials, and community leaders are not really solutions. They say, "We need to get more citizens involved" or "We need to study the issue."
These answers amount to little more than kicking the can down the road. I can offer a simple, direct solution.
Prohibit peace officers from initiating force against non-violent offenders.
By "force" I mean any deliberate action that results in unwanted physical harm or contact, or a credible and imminent threat of such harm or contact.
Peace officers would still be able to use force against violent offenders, and to defend themselves and others. They would only be prohibited from initiating force.
Following this simple policy would have prevented the death of Tyre Nichols, George Floyd, Eric Garner, and many other non-violent offenders. Our jails wouldn't be chronically overcrowded. The people would feel safe when encountering peace officers, instead of fearful that the encounter could result in serious injury or death.
