A State Department official has confirmed that the Chinese balloon that flew over the U.S. for several days contained multiple antennas that were capable of collecting signals intelligence. NBC’s Da De Luce and Marissa Parra have details.

Their expert said the balloon had "…multiple antennas that can geolocate communications…" Doesn't he know that sentence doesn't make sense? The balloon may or may not be for spying, but all I hear are so called 'experts' who say dumb or nonsensical statements and claim it was spying without evidence. I just read that some 'experts' believe the balloon was picking up encrypted cell communication. At 60,000 ft? Unlikely. Have you tried using your cell phone at 35,000 ft on a plane? I suspect that in our NASA Balloon Program we use devices that have dual purpose – gathering scientific data or spying. If it were me, I'd have asked the Chinese to send someone from the "weather" balloon company to explain the components found. The problem with China is that civilian companies are often coupled with the CCP and their military so it's hard to discern whether a scientific endeavor is for civilian or military use or both. Journalists should be asking to see actual evidence versus just committing to government statements being true, like the NBC 'expert'. Yeesh!!!
