The U.S. military shot down another high-altitude, unidentified object, now over Lake Huron. The Pentagon said in a statement that the object “flew in proximity to sensitive Department of Defense sites” and assessed it was “a safety flight hazard and a threat due to its potential surveillance capabilities.”

All are balloons even with different shapes to test the American radars. Do you remember Nimitz California in 2004? The so called tic-tac shape ufo was an American super plasma hot balloon to simulate the under developing Russian hypersonic missiles. When that unfortunate US Nimitz pilot (due to a fault of his deck liaison officer) took off his F18 fighter to investigate the scene he reported some ufo (the secret test American balloon). Rapidly your CIA reared a campaign saying it was a flying saucer from the outer space (the "tic-tac" ufo).
Well. In summary. I am a non American baby boomer from abroad. I lived in a period when there was no NORAD, no Cheyenne Mountain, when NSA was a really secretive agency. Instead there were the so called "Washington line", "Pine line" and "high Canada" lines of radar domes before NORAD (and NORAD surveillance satellites).
If there were Russians coming from the East there were lots of interceptor missiles on the California shores ready to fire. If the Russians would come from Alaska, well, there was nothing to do except retaliate with nukes on board of the B52 squadrons. It was a game of pure adrenaline but remember that we (boomers) were allied during the second World war and there was respect (and I would say some mutual admiration) among all of us including communists and liberals or Republicans. We boomers didn't destroy the world. So praise your boomers all over the world including in Russia. Now Putin is considered a "bad guy" but he is the last Russian boomer… All we would think while facing this terrible perspective of a future nuclear militarized world without those old allies as leaderships (who came to be adversaries during the cold war) is bleak. Remember that old allies who came to be only adversaries (not true enemies) still is a safe international situation. But can you imagine a future without those old boomer leadership? Now they are sending balloons against the American territory. It is a clear message. They are saying "we can easily reach your territory as you reach ours" with himars, M77, M1 Abrahams and disguised harpoons or F16 maybe. Your own US territory is not safe. This is the message. Now I ask Americans. What the Western diplomacy is doing to stop this war in Ukraine?

They were the first and only victims of a Japanese Fu-Go balloon bomb, and the only Americans killed by enemy action in the continental US during the war.
