In reality, the US currently lacks China's tested capability to launch hundreds to thousands of land-based multi-warheaded hypersonic (not-ballistic like ICBM, but unpredictable trajectory instead) nuclear missiles such as 9300 mile ranged DF41, capable of pulverizing US mainland and hundreds of foreign bases within 25 minutes; not to mention nuclear subs and stealth bombers. The real nuclear deterrence is not reciprocal US nukes, it's the resulting global cross-border radiation causing massive deaths, permanent winter, crop failure, starvation and eventually human extinction.
