Why is Welfare never mentioned when discussing entitlements? It's always Social Security and Medicare.

when it comes to SS , it breaks just about even, we get about 1$ out for every 1$ we put in. Medicare on the other hand? 5$ out for every 1$ in. We have to fix our healthcare system. allow medicare to negotiate the price of meds. lift the income caps on taxable income. expand programs that allow our elderly family member to stay out of costly facilities, stay in their homes or the homes of family members. these are all low investment/high yield ideas that are not new to anyone in congress who has given more than a passing glance to the data.

Eliminating or increasing the annual Social Security wage cap would partially solve the shortfall.

Time to balance a real budget and stop spending more than you take in. Only fund a new government program after assessing the crappy ones that don't work. social security can be improved by the following: tax all income i.e., the tax stops at around $170k income, so the wealthy pay no SS tax above that income level, and yet the receive full benefits—that has to stop. Taxes on ss for the wealthy need to be implemented, and benefits for the wealthy need to end—period. End age 62 early take. End benefits for many non-retirement circumstances (alcoholic or pothead sitting at home in US or Puerto Rico, classified as a disability). Those are just starters, and it can be improved through running it like an investment program for annuity, rather than a Ponzi scheme.
