A federal program providing free meals for more than 50 million students during the pandemic ended at the beginning of the fall semester. Since September, 900 schools have since racked up over $19 million in debt, according to the School Nutrition Association. Families are now struggling to find lunch money as many don’t qualify for free or reduced lunch programs. NBC News’ Zinhe Essamuah speaks with families struggling to find their children’s next meals.

Not being able to walk at graduation? Because of something we give for free to prisoners? Three times a day? Absolutely heartbreaking and disgusting. I too was an embarrassed single mom of 2 who "made too much" to qualify for assistance. It broke my heart when they got shut off from meals because of overdue payment. So embarrassing for THEM.

We can send billions to Ukraine and spend $800 billion on the military each year. We just can't come up with the money to keep children from going hungry each school day. And from having to watch their wealthier school mates eat while they get nothing.
When I was a child we carried our lunches to school and in high school you didn’t get lunch unless you paid upfront. No such thing as a school lunch debt. I have a simple solution…….also, if you can’t afford to support your own children don’t have them. Don’t give me crap about circumstances change. You know what I’m talking about.
It's cheaper to send your kids to school with lunch than to have them buy lunch. Kids have less time to eat when they have to stand in line and buy lunch. My kids say they don't have time to eat when they buy.

We need to stop calling ourselves the richest country in the world when we can't even take care of the most vulnerable. We're the most greedy country in the world.
We need a universal basic income for children. There are too many incapable parents. This would pay for itself over time with increased tax revenue and decreased social spending as the percentage of functional to nonfunctional adults increases as a result of sufficient childhood support. Kids need a lot more rights and protections in the family structure in general.
Here in Canada lunches are never provided. My daughter's in grade 7 and I have provided her with a lunch every single day of her school career thus far.
The only hot food she gets from the school is a weekly pizza day which I have to pay for..

When I was a kid, we always had free lunches so I always thought it was weird that kids would be denied lunch if they couldn't pay. When I got older I realized it was because we were a title 1 school that provides free lunch for more poor areas. Still, if everyone had free lunches, especially since food is a human necessity, then this wouldn't be needed. If there's anything worth our tax dollars, it's feeding the children in this country.
These irresponsible parents should buy bread and peanut butter and jelly and give it to them.
