At Roseville Middle School near Detroit, coach and reading teacher Stasi Earl asked school staff members to write letters to students about why they inspire them. In January, they surprised some of the students with the handwritten notes of gratitude. NBC News’ Kate Snow shares the profound and moving moments from the students receiving the uplifting letters.

Crying at 8 am
I feel like it says something about some of these kids home life when kind words of affirmation bring them to tears like it's something they've been desperately waiting to hear from someone in their life. I would like to think they're getting the encouragement and support they need at home, but unfortunately not all of them are. That's what makes seemingly small, honest gestures like this all the more important.

Sometimes kids will go their whole childhood without one compliment or good thing said to them. It can really break a persons spirit. I’m glad this meant so much to them. 😭😭😭

This is the kind of affirmation we had growing up. I'm 47 and my teachers keep up with us.

Some kids don’t have anyone at home that tells them they are proud of them or grateful for them. I can imagine this might change their whole outlook on life. More schools should do this. People in general should be more open and tell those that they care about how much they mean to them. This world needs more kindness.

The kid with the hoodie got me. You could tell he had a lot of issues in life and at home, and nobody has ever told that person how special they are to the teacher. This is why we should all do our part to reach out to even the most troubled kids.
