I think Republicans are putting too much stock in Desantis. Florida had/has an extremely weak independent and democratic political structure. It has been that way since Bush got elected. It was easy for Florida to take a hard right!
You can't replicate that anywhere else. Florida has a huge tourism economy which gives it room to play around, but try that in the Midwest and see how fast your economy collapses.

Trump knows there is little prospect of him winning a legitimate election. That isn't the plan. It's a second coup, with the benefit of experience and the commitment, with eyes wide open, of a radicalized party and base who are already calling the January 6th insurrectionists "political prisoners of war" and calling for the arrest and punishment of the Bidens, Obamas, Clintons and pretty much all Democratic leaders, for "treason".
