For about the last week, every day I check, there's a new story about another major winter storm that's going to hit California. It feels so surreal. Like a joke (of nature) or something. Even though it's as deadly serious as it can get. It's just getting so ridiculous, it doesn't even feel like real. Like some twisted version of it instead. But the number of things that make life feel like a twisted version of the world I grew up in in the 90's could fill a warehouse at this point. I'm sure there are lots of people who know how I feel.
And to be clear, I don't even live in California. I couldn't imagine what they must be going through or how they must feel. But I'm just talking about the sheer volume of major news stories, both about natural disasters and about man-made catastrophes, or one making the other worse. I thought I was seeing a lot of major world history changing news back in the early 2000s.
Compared to certain things that have happened recently, the issues we faced in the 2000s seemed pretty tame. Except maybe the recession, but I feel like even that's going to blown out of the water in this decade. But I mean, we thought George W. Bush was the worst thing to happen to the presidency. That right there shows how starkly things have changed. It's easy, almost natural, to want to deny it (internally) and convince yourself that things are okay. I envy those who can do that. But when you take a step back and look at things objectively… like I said it's like a twisted version of reality. To say the least.
