As far as I see it, the technical issue IS that "Russia cannot under any schematics allow NATO or NATO friendly expansion along it's borders any further" much less across it's only southern navy and shipping access points. It is to the effect of the problems of the early twentieth century all again. Too, the Ukraine did not have much of a military input economically in the region of any type so is no assistance.
USA, may be more spending money on an "absolute principal" on Ukraine than a sensible use now pay later action inclusive trade weight with the donations of weapons and technology as Ukraine neither spent on militia nor weapons before the conflict but largely relied on assistance from other countries. It's difficult to understand what finally of sensibility USA is saving at massive expense to itself that maybe reaching a dangerous level of anything like closing government to clear debts occurs again.

All escape routes from Bakhmut are under Russian fire control. Zelenskyy successfully created another slaughterhouse for Ukrainian troops. In reality Zelenskyy is the gift that keeps giving for the Russians. Ukraine already lost most trained and motivated soldiers along with almost all hardware it had before the war plus hundreds of tanks and IFVs it got from Eastern Europe (to understand the scale of losses it had 1 990 tanks, 1 212 IFVs, 1 112 heavy artillery systems, 354 multiple rocket launchers). Its army is a shadow of its former self at the beginning of the war. Mass summary executions for attempted surrender or unauthorized retreat just cause further demoralization and despair. Zelenskyy strategy is reduced to rounding up civilians often at gunpoint and throwing them into a meat grinder . Bakhmut is just the last instance of this insane tactic. Russians have 1:6 advantage in artillery according to WaPo of all places. 85% of Ukrainian soldiers are killed even without seeing an enemy. WSJ is quoting Ukrainian commander in Bakhmut as saying: “So far body count "exchange rate” is strongly in favor of the Russians. If we carry on like this, we will rapidly burn through all our conscription resources.”
