In 1998, Randall Bagley shot and killed Donald Mitchell during a Maryland robbery. When Bagley asked for a sentence reduction 24 years later, Mitchell’s son Idris stunned the courtroom by asking the judge to release him. The two recently reunited. Lester Holt shares more on this moving story of forgiveness.

I've come to believe that forgiving helps the forgiver as much or more than the person being forgiven.

Impressive. Both of them actually. But the son doing that blows my mind. He’s got more courage, strength and dignity than I could manage. And the killer genuinely comes across as a reformed man. Hope they both find peace in their lives.

This is pitiful! My father is definitely deserving of better. It is horrible that we as a society are giving these murderers second chances yet innocent people who are slain by these inhumane beings are not getting second chances at life. We as a society have our priorities completely backwards; this person should be languishing in jail. They definitely don't make men like they used to anymore. There was once a concept known as honor and protecting one’s family. This has nothing to do with education either. I have earned a Juris Doctorate degree, and I am a 34 year old black man. I believe you are just a coward, and definitely lacking of candor. I believe you bring shame to your whole family but most importantly to your father. I am certain he is disappointed to have such an unfilial son such as yourself; coward. I pray nothing happens to your mother or any other family members. I am afraid you might send a thank you card next time.
