Dollar stores squeezing out grocery stores and leading to creation of food deserts, study finds

In March, advocacy group the Institute for Local Self-Reliance published a study that found that dollar stores are pulling sales away from local grocery stores in predominantly rural, low-income Black and Latino neighborhoods, leading some areas to become food deserts. Now communities across the country are fighting back. NBC News’ Zinhle Essamuah reports.

  1. So competition is a 'bad' thing? I'm confused about capitailism now. Supply, demand, prices… that's the basics. If you can't compete with the dollar stores on some items then figure out what they aren't selling or doing and change your game plan. Whining and playing victim isn't going to solve you're issue… because the issue is you're not competitive enough in a capitalist game.

  2. Or is it that the grocery stores that open in those areas get robbed to death everyday and choose to close their stores rather than to let the people steal everything that's not bolted down. It's one of those issues we won't actually address because it would hurt the "other groups" feelings…..

  3. Dollar general has held me down for the last year and a half….

  4. blah blah, ne gros always playin the victim. The real reason ne gro neighborhoods dont have sh it is because 70% of ne gros shoplift! its not dollar stores fault no one else can or will come into a ne gro hood!

  5. I wish everything in Dollar Tree was still a dollar. Now it's the one dollar and 25 cents tree

  6. Dollar store! Where everything is made in China. Can y'all see where this is going?

  7. Wherever people use their Five Finger Discount card and there Black privilege card, store closings occur

  8. Well stop robbing these stores and maybe they'll stick around.

  9. The cheaper the better.😊

  10. Dollar stores and McDonald’s on EVERY “urban” corner. Gee, wonder why?? 🤨 (right)
If you have to live there, ALWAYS drive across town for the quality because they’ll never bring it to you.

  11. How can you fight back against low price? Maybe if life is better for some people, they’d be able to afford buying from regular grocery store. Sometimes a few cent difference counts. Even dollar stores are getting expensive. Minimum product is now $1.45.

  12. Look, dollar stores help those that can’t afford the ever climbing prices at a grocery store. Like the chick said in her interview, they don’t replace grocery stores. If I only have five bucks and need to feed my children, I don’t care about customer service, I only care about my babies being fed.

  13. Black black black… if I was worried bout an all white business I would be racist

  14. The solution is simple, if the neighborhood doesn't want those stores around don't shop their.

  15. al i hear is " you should shop at my store because the price of the item does not matter as much as me treating you nicer if i see you in person"

  16. They mad because poor people cant afford their expensive food

  17. If grocery stores weren't so greedy by jumping their prices, I, as a Senior Citizen, would support them. In the meantime I can't afford $5 chicken and $6 eggs.

  18. Some towns only have one grocery store and one dollar store. The closest anything else is to us is an hour away. I'm not spending $10 on hellmans at my local grocery store when dg has it for $4.75. Some people need these stores.

  19. hahaha…….Sooo, let me get this straight…….
PRIVATE BUSINESSES, that don't feel like sacrificing THEIR PROFITS to theives and violence are now to blame for the lack of "options" for the poor inner city "victims"? Is that correct??🤣
Congratulations NBC…this is a NEW LOW in irresponsible journalism!!
Then you wonder why NO ONE trusts the mainstream media anymore!👍

  20. People shop based on their financial situation. It has nothing to do with the number of dollar stores in a particular area.

  21. Lies, Lies and more Lies…….the grocery stores are leaving because they are getting ROBBED BLIND And soon the dollar stores are going to leave, just like Walmarts, Targets, and MANY others…..Stop with your propaganda…..it ain’t working…..

  22. So they are being outsold by a competitor and are trying to get us to boycott? It’s all about money, they want your money.

  23. This isn’t just about dollar general this is about lack of opportunities for the people in those communities so that they could push out Dollar General.
