A plagiarism detection service has developed a new program to detect when students have used artificial intelligence programs like ChatGPT to write their essays. NBC News’ Gadi Schwartz has the details on what happened when a professor put the new detector to the test.

Chatgpt is a great place to get ideas/ an outline. If you don’t change it, that’s your own fault. It’s just like using your friend’s work, you can copy it but change it up to match your writing style/suit the question better

Does ChatGPT cite its sources when you tell it to write an essay/paper?
I’ve used ChatGPT for school. It gives decent answers but a 5th grader could tell a paper was written by it. Like any tool, it has the ability to be abused.
Colleges need to embrace the tech or it will destroy them.

Teachers who don't want AI generated assignments, don't have the SKILLS to identify whether the assignments are original work, so they will use AI to do their work for them. How's that different?
Oral exams. No pencil, no paper, no computers. A professor asks you some questions in person and you either know the answers or you don’t.

Actually, I’m all for this. I don’t agree with what the one professor was saying. As this is an amazing tool for self-teaching. Especially when learning how to over come problems and get solutions to math problems for an example. This can help with language learning and breaking things down. Sure it can spit out an essay, but it’s capable of more than just essays. I would say be careful using it as some information might not be accurate, or might be more accurate than what a professor/teacher teaches you.
The recent years it seems like nobody really knows how to use it properly and is now creating fear amongst the educational and work system. This can all go back to what’s really wrong with the educational system in general. It hasn’t evolved.
Wait this is smart though. Learning to do this through ai is waaaay more practical and useful. Why on earth would you WANT students wasting their time, when they can be learning more important things. Theres a reason why we dont teach students how to wash their clothes with a scrubbing board… we have machines now. I feel like school now, is more about submission, than it actually is about education, and preparing for the future.

While in college I started a study group and was then accused of cheating because we all had similar answers on tests. I feel old.
Identifying AI would be great but it is not as easy as a plagiarism detector that just scans existing text. I really doubt that they have an accurate AI detector this early in the game, I feel like this is a grift to get easy money from school systems and universities.

We had to think what to write our

why are we developing things that will take away jobs from an economy who can barely make ends meet as it is, just asking for trouble
What a way to ruin the fun, for essays about topics such as math, history, and other topics, this shouldn’t matter, because writing an essay doesn’t always mean you understand the material, for me personally I love essays on topics I am interested about, not everyone feels the same and they are simply using tools to make their lives easier & ease their stress gained by crunching for an essay. The only sectors where there should be concern for AI use is medical, legal sectors, when getting a degree to teach, and in some cases computer science, any others shouldn’t matter much.

If I was still in school I would be using services like ChatGPT to write my first draft. I would then go an re-write the whole thing in my own words but not before understand enough about the subject. Using something like ChatGPT to get started isn't a bad thing. It's no different to reading a book about the subject. It's just another source of information you can use during the research phase. Sure ChatGPT and the like are often factually wrong, but you would notice that in the course of doing research.
