A group of bipartisan senators introduced legislation that would protect kids online. If passed, the bill would ban kids under the age of 13 from using social media. NBC News’ Julie Tsirkin details what else the bill would do.

this would never work
What were they smoking?
A little too late to close pandora's box after it's been opened.
If they wanted to ruin social media for everyone or most people of all ages they’d have to go do something extreme like put up a paywall on most platforms.
Shame on them let the parents be parents it's not the government's job to to raise our children how about a little bit of help in the mental health help. You want to know why young people don't have children nowadays it's the stupid things they don't want the government raising their children and telling them how to parent text not the government's place we as parents need to talk to our children more about more in-depth stuff and not just how is your day they need to learn about the hard things in life so that they know how to handle them when they get out on their own. Talk to your children people really talk their problems are just as big to them as ours are to us
ROFLMFAO! Good luck with that! They want guns in their hands, but they don't want kids to have access to information. No kid anywhere is going to stand for this BS.
Social media is too broad a term. Even YouTube is considered social media and many of us couldn't imagine growing up being barred from it. If you're concerned with your kid being on social media too much, do a better job of parenting your kid. Some social media sites like YouTube can have some really significant educational value if used correctly. Science or history documentaries for example
You know this is not going to work.
This bill is mostly a bad idea. This is a wolf in sheep's clothing and would not end well. Parents need to parent; they need to monitor what their kids are ingesting. The only part I am a little ok with is the targeting of the algorithms, but those algorithms are part of the social problems now. The rest smacks of the same problems with the abortion bans; they tear away the idea that there is a right to any privacy granted by the fourth amendment (illegal search and seizure) because the extremist governments will use it to say that the information is public, since you gave the info to your internet provider.
Social media prevents people from growing up.
They should ban minors from devices capable of having apps that interact with adults minor should only have dumb phones, this is a ploy for everybody to provide an ID before using the internet and invading our privacy
They should call it the Touch Grass Act
Democrats are bailing on silicon valley
Disney character panties are the most cutest and comfortable kind of panties to wear vgtf
If you want to "ban" something, "ban" all "vaccine mandates" and other crimes against humanity.
Maybe be better parents and talk to your children instead of blaming your bad parenting on everyone else 🤷
YOU GUY ARE EVIL MONSTER
Luckily, I'm not affected myself since I'm an adult being that I'm in my 30s already.
who did that? that a shameful
Will get through this
Hope this passes. 🙏🏻🙏🏻
People have been using the internet like on a tablet or phone or any specific during a transition but if I’m being honest I understand the internet is dangerous and also and possibly can get get worse for people under 13 but for the government idk what’s gone to the persons head but for a reason the government shouldn’t be taking that far like that’s kinda messed up in my opinion but if thats what parents or adults want well that’s fine but for some people no so tbh I think the government should chill out when trying to do that another thing is that the government has more power than a citizen which is true and I am 13 and I’m about to be 14 next week Thursday and tbh social is not that dangerous but for some people like adults or parents they just wanna to keep their child safe from bad and messed up stuff and I understand but anyways that’s all I gotta say
This would be awesome I hope it passes
Sounds like they dont know what algorithms even are. I see this as using kids as an excuse to push ID requirements to access the internet. They'll try to take away any anonymous posting next.
Can we up that to people up to the age of 100? Social media is a cancer.
Agree👍, this should have happened after cyber bullying was known…soon is better then never…
Law makers just wasting time and gov money. how about we work on rebuilding america
Social media has already been declared through a lawsuit an official method of communication for politicians. Teenagers and children are still citizens of this country and, therefore, cannot be denied access to their representatives through legislation such as this. Find a better way.
So, instead of policing social media companies, try and fail to police children.
Someone take grandpa's legislative powers away and send them to bed.
1:35 Yes, so BAN GUNS NOT SOCIAL ACTIVITIES. Sorry, you wanna talk government telling you what you can and cannot do with your children now? Isn't the abortion issue bad enough? Having the apps themselves stop their algorithms from allowing harmful content, sure; but tell me that my kid cannot use an app the way he chooses? Yeah, not gonna happen.
This again just proves how out of touch the government is… Most of them are so old they have no idea how the internet works.. There is literally ZERO way you could enforce this, you would have to blanket ban every social media site via your isp and that would block even any adults wanting to use it in that house too.
There is no way an isp can distinguish a persons age it's just physically not possible AND that is not even taking into account the use of vpns or proxies a 4 year old can bypass it with a single click of an app.
This is what happens when you have some people in office that where literally born before television…
Nice to see the government trying to be parents baby daddy 😂
How you going to enforce that?
Seems like a good idea on paper, but irl, not so much…
A completely useless and unenforceable law. Just hold them accountable for the crimes from Jan 6th and be done with them.
Oops! It's a trick! "They" won't give up that income stream.
Ban freedom I guess
How are you going to fund it when your government shuts down next month due to the debt ceiling issue?
This is a stupid bill, because nobody lies on the internet. These kids can just sign up with a fake birthday. Instead of trying to legislate this, how about parents get more involved and raise their kids to not judge themselves off other people's measuring sticks.
Or rather establish a completely separate internet for minors. Call it the (gen) Z zone or something to make it sound cool. Or the (gen) Alpha pack network.
Stop giving government power especially in your home you want these kids to be better do it yourselves.
Republicans are spending a lot of time and effort trying to identify who the minors are and where they are. Why?
