At a recycling center in Boulder, Colorado, automation and artificial intelligence are becoming part of the process. The AI learned how to tell pieces of plastic from sheets of paper and also learns how to grab them. NBC News’ Jacob Ward has more details on the technology.

Garbage sorting for recycling is the perfect job for ROBOTS. A whole system of garbage sorting recycling and disposal for energy use, solar/wind powered, robots that can handle and neutralize toxic materials. Why are humans being exposed to hazardous waste like this? Robots should be doing THIS JOB.

I love to hear things like this for AI! I'm all for it.
Look at how people sieve through those rubbish. They managed to remove a small fraction of it. The rest will probably end up in the landfill. People are still kidding themselves with recycling fantasy while in reality, rubbish gets "sold" to poor countries.
“These aren’t jobs that people are clamoring for” yet you hear ignorant people say “those illegals are taking my job!” There you go! You have jobs y’all just don’t want those kinda jobs. Those immigrants on the border could be working here. Let’s stop acting like immigrants and homeless people can’t do this.
I remember touring the recycling center in my area when i was in 5th grade in 2011.
People always talk about how their AI can make our lives better, but oftentimes they are underwhelming. But this is a realm in which the AIs have a huge inherent advantage over humans. I have a high hope that AI will solve a lot of issues related with garbages, turn them into a valuable resource, and save the planet in the process. It's a win-win-win.
We don't need human who get sick, just update the robot to work more accurate and faster.

It's truly remarkable. However, it's the start of a solution we started by being so wasteful. We don't want to wash dishes so we're quick to drink from plastic bottles and eat off paper plates ( I included myself by saying "We"). It's convenient, but I'm constantly thinking about all the plastic forks, spoons, and bottles that get a one-time use. We need to do better. 😔
If all packaging material for short term use was compostable, that would be even better.
Very misleading – Plastic can NOT be recycled over and over. Glass, metal, and paper products can be recycled. When glass and paper become to impure to recycle they can be broken down and returned to nature with out harm. People watching this video get a "feel good" false notion that plastic recycling is viable into the future – it is not. We have been making glass for hundreds of years, paper too, we are not swimming in them because they are recyclable. Great for AI, bad for the environment, in the future.
