You guys and your whole panel, especially Tom Moody, are fools. Mark Taylor, Virat Kohli, Arjuna Ranatunga, etc always had players who were the best in their nation. Dhoni has showed that he can turn around and win games with a champion team as well as with underdogs and make players like jogendra sharma, sreesanth, Tushar deshpande, ruturaj gayakwad, etc into match winners.
T20 world cup, 50 over world cup, ICC Champions trophy, winning the CB ODI series in Australia in 2010/11, first test win in NZ, nr 1 test team in the world, 5 T20 trophies, 2 champions league trophies (people forget these ones)…. and how many players has he groomed? yeah he is on my Mt Rushmore (or lets take an indian analogy: the top 4 peaks of the Himalayas) of captains in Cricket history for sure.. Ponting i dont rate that much cause look at the teams he had!
They've been continuously hyping these things & Dhoni like anything. There's a world outside IPL & even outside T20s. Ponting was the greatest captain ever. Border, Wagh, Cronje, Ganguly, Imran Khan, even Kohli are better captains than Dhoni.

As a cricket fan this is my personal thinking a true parameter of judging player potential is Test Cricket you get to know each aspect of his game. In limited over cricket sometimes you not need to show every aspect. Even 20-30 runs inning become the match winning inning. People going after you in last over you get 3 wkts.
Again emphasing that this my personal opinion.
The stand out difference between other captains that people have mentioned below and Dhoni is Dhoni always had surprises which others didn't. Classic difference was in 2013 Champions trophy where he had Ishant Sharma to bowl in a crunch over and he rewarded back with 2 wickets. Also Lloyd, Ponting and Waugh has a great team who knew what their job was but in case of MSD his best team was 2011 WC winning team which was the best indian team of this millenium. Others were so so, either batting but bowling was kind of ok. Only after Kohli came in we started to dig in better fast bowlers which helped us win trophies outside of the subcontinent.
On the basis of winning the big Tournaments and creating best players for future MSD as a captain is right on the top no one comes close to him. People are saying Virat was best test captain bt who made India 1st in test for first time that was MS. He won 2 test mace. Whether it's ICC trophies or IPL or Asia Cup, MS won everything in cricket.

If a Captain is only as good as the team, Then Ponting is the best captain going purely by wins. That Aussie team was a different beast.
If cricket pops up in anyone mouth, MSD shud be the captain. Hands down. Lot of great captains like ranatunga, kapil paaji, ricky, steve is there. But msd has the lil edge. He achieved everything in cricket.

First of all it is a shame you are having Manjrekar in the show who was just an below average cricketer, secondly a highly biased & disrespectful person and thirdly, the worst commentator the world has seen the history of sports

IPL- Gautam Gambhir because he didn't had great teams llike CSK or MI but then also winning 2 IPLs is no mean feat.
I think we as Indians get too much carried away by the no. of trophies won. Winning trophies is important but can't be the sole criteria or rather it should be the qualifying eligibility to be considered among the greats. Among remember trophies come into picture in only the white ball cricket. In tests it has just begun.
The other important point is captaincy has 2 important factors to be considered. The 2 factors are:
1. Tactical Nous- short term aspect- it comprises selection of playing XI, field placement, bowling changes, bowling ends, batting order etc.
2. Strategical- long term aspect- where do you see your team 5 years down the line, what kind of culture you want to build, looking for the talents who can serve the country well and for longer periods of time, once you pass on the baton what kind of players you are providing to your successor or rather Indian Cricket
Dada had both the elements, strategy more than tactical nous. That's why I consider him the greatest Indian captain ever. Dhoni hassucceeded
