At the top in China, the authoritarian Xi seems to be attempting to build a military he believes a super power should have to truly be *super*, while attempting to avoid overt inflammation with US, Australia, Japan and the rest of the collective West. He isnt entirely succeeding there. The rope does in fact seem to be reaching its end. We see the Spratley Islands dispute as a power move to assert influence in their own back yard, indeed deflating US power in the region. For Xi to be successful however, it would take some highly deft maneuvering on the part of not only Xi, but successive administrations. I'm not sure Xi has ever imagined such a concept as what comes after him, or even has that kind of patience, and the nature of strongmen seems to push against such a narrative. Do we really think Xi can be conciliatory to a politically unstable US and achieve such a lofty gain? A very loud extremist minority in the US seem to want wars on multiple fronts(China, Iran, *and Mexico*), while the rest of us haven't really sorted it all out. Too many forks in the trail ahead.
