I spilled blood and sweat by standing alongside US soldiers to fight for women and children rights at the end my entire family lives under taliban moms and children gets beaten small girls being sold to older men. Richard Engle presses Staniczai, the white bearded Talib who led the negotiating team, on his interpretations of Islam as concerns women's rights. Staniczai insists that women will "have the right of education", but it hasn't turned out that way. In fairness to Staniczai, he recently wrote a public letter of protest to the Taliban leadership – a rare thing – about barring women from secondary school and university.
Engle skips over the decision to invade Afghanistan. Before and after 9/11, the Taliban had been making offers to turn Bin Ladin over. Bush wouldn't hear of it. From the ABC story "US Rejects New Taliban Offer", Oct 14, 2001: "The United States today rejected yet another offer by Afghanistan's ruling Taliban to turn over Osama bin Laden for trial in a third country if the U.S. presents evidence against bin Laden and stops air attacks. President Bush reiterated the position the U.S. has held since fingering bin Laden and his al Queda organization as masterminding the for the Sept. 11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. "There's no need to discuss it," Bush said. "We know he's guilty. Just turn him over. … There's nothing to negotiate about. They're harboring a terrorist and they need to turn him over."
We went straight to invasion, and we might well have had the right to, but it ended badly. The invasion failed to get Bin Ladin or to rid Afghanistan of the Taliban, and it got us into a horrible 20 year, $2 trillion dollar war. We would have done better to have made a deal with the Taliban.
The money spent on this war means that each American has paid around $7000 for it, with nothing to show for it. How does that make you feel as an American citizen on food stamps?
