It's time to upgrade your HVAC Air Filters to a higher MERV Rating or HEPAs. Most units let you run just the blower to filter air.
Tar get & Wal mart sell plugin Air Purifiers. Look for activated charcoal filters that absorb toxic gasses.
Vacuuming can improve indoor air quality especially if your vacuum has a HEPA filter.
If driving in smoke, change from outside air, to inside air and run the fan through the cabin filter, usually found behind the glove box.
Snake Plants can remove indoor air pollutants such as formaldehyde, benzene, xylene, trichloroethylene, toluene, and ammonia.
They should consider setting up community centers with plugin air purifiers for people that have nowhere to escape the smoke.
After the smoke dissipates and if your living space smells like smoke, it is possible to get rid of odors with an ozone generator, the space must be unoccupied for several hours though, then aired out.
