80% of bear deaths are causes by black bears. Every single time a bear or a mountain lion attacks someone we have to get the caned naturalist regurgitate. It must have been sick or old or something wrong. As numbers of these animals rise so do attacks and I'm sick of naturalist BS. Obviously AZ isn't going to have lots of bear attacks since its dry desert as well. Part of the reason a guy like this got killed is because when it happens people always say 'OHHH ITS SOOOOOO RARE' its not rare – if you are cooking and in their habitat – they are coming and you need to be ready to defend your life.

I believe the last fatal attack in Az was in 2011, not in the 1980s. Also, while rare, as they are usually timid, predatory black bear attacks are well documented. Few if any were because the bear was sick or old, etc. It is usually young males that are either habituated or unfamiliar with people (as in Alaska). A truly terrifying fate.
