Test scores for 13-year-olds continue to plunge in math and reading, new data reveals

New data reveals that test scores among 13-year-olds have continued to plunge — with math down nine points and reading down four from 2019, before the pandemic, to the fall of 2022. NBC News’ Stephanie Gosk has more on what some experts call an “educational crisis” that’s spreading across all regions and affecting all kids.

  1. As a person with a degree in Education and now a retired college professor, I believe the current philosophies of teaching are misguided and based on false assumptions and strategies that do not work. I retired during the COVID-19 lockdown. That semester was a useless wash for many courses.

  2. Thats because the kids are getting browner. Therefore their IQs are dropping. Its biology. Plus they dont teach math worth a crap and teachers dont care.

  3. the kids now all just want to be on their phones, social media, internet, etc. They are trying to blame these results on COVID, it wasn't COVID!! I know some very smart parents that got after their kids to study during lockdowns.

  4. Seems about right given the fact kids were kept out of schools during covid all thanks to the fearful Democrats.

  5. some kids didn’t pass the 5th grade and thought it was just a 2 week break

  6. I am not surprised by this at all. Each generation is getting worse and worse it seems. It is quite sad.

  7. If your getting your 10 year old a phone, expect their grades to plummet. Get them a book or two.

  8. No socializing, “schooling” at home, steady diet of dystopian video game isolation.. what could go wrong?

  9. Teachers aren’t to blame. In America, the dumbest people are having most of the kids; the cycle just continues: Stupid in, stupid out.

  10. In Baltimore school's are just a place to get fed and fight, math and reading are considered Racist

  11. At least they are being Groomed

  12. Before watching: probably cause republicans are worried that 2+2 might make Johnny like his guy friend.. theyd rather keep their kids ignorantly the same, than allow them to educate themselves and be who they feel most comfortable as.

  13. Integrate the Charter School system, kick out the baddies and send them to a juvy school to straighten them up and earn credits. That way, students know true consequence.

  14. I don't know anything about student test scores. However, reading and writing abilities as reflected in online chats, texts and comments sections lead me to believe that about half of the ADULT population in this country is functionally illiterate.

  15. Education is working just as the ruling class intended. It's about Obedient Workers. Just smart enough to work the machines and just dumb enough to never question it.

  16. Honestly I think it’s the short form videos, lots of YouTube shorts and TikTok videos. IT short cuts the kids attention span and they’re no longer able to focus. I myself notice a change when I had more time at home and scrolling through videos.

I couldn’t focus and felt brain dead a lot of the times. It’s only recently that I started to cut my watch hours and I feel better now and doing better with my studies

  17. I work in a school, and teachers are now required to give all kids a passing grade no matter what.

  18. "All the funding went into erectile dysfunction research". Idiocracy, 2006

  19. Every year test scores go down yet we are expected to give teacher praise and respect? Teahers cry about being underpaid yet the results of their work suggest they are overpaid. Maybe it's time they stop grooming children for their personal agendas and educate them instead.

  20. Demographics. Simple

  21. And just when you thought Americans couldn't get any dumber…

  22. Mathematics seems useless but it’s probably the most important study for young people. It’s like calisthenics for the brain.
