On the contrary, Russian people don't blame rank-and-file wagnerites for Prigozhin's treason. They are glad that Putin had taken the necessary steps to end this and return the military and the wagner group to waging the war in Russia's defence.

Pregozhin went on R&R
I'm guessing Putin knows Pregozhin is loyal to the state. He knew calling Preghozin a traitor would make him think twice. I think Putin knows he still has Pregozhin's loyalty, as long as he follows through with whatever deal was made. Pregozhin won't go to Belarus alone. After years of dealing with Putin and the others, I don't think Preghozin would fall for that. Russia is run more like an ancient country with various kings, with Putin being the High King.
We will know soon whether this was really an insurrection or a strategic move.

Well Anne Applebaum, your analysis of the reaction of the Russian people to the Wagner boss forgot to mention that they have taken a shine to a man who is even more brutal than Putin. If Putin falls, it seems Russia will be lead by a regime even more violent than Putin's. Russians are nasty people and must be treated as such. To pretend that the Russian people are just being mislead, but otherwise are just like other Europeans is a mistake I think. They are bitter that their empire collapsed and has been usurped by China. They are impotent and angry.
In short Russia is a mess and will always be a mess and it could – and likely will – implode or explode in a very bad way for themselves and also for everyone else..
