It looks like science needs a lesson on the Law of Flow.
I am so humbled by this research.
It's double red flags. When you walk onto the beach, there are signs that say no water entry on double red flag days. It is actually a $500 fine. People drown because they were stupid and got in the water.
I wonder if there are citations or penalties given out to those people who were warned by lifeguards but still went into unsafe waters and had to be rescued. Can you ban someone from the beach?
This is very good advice as the summer is here. I cannot swim so I am always near the shoreline. If a lifeguard had already warned me about riptides, I don't think you would have to tell me twice.
FLORIDA AGAIN And they don't even have BIG waves like the West Coast. I NEVER swam where there were lifeguards. I don't know those people. I can swim. Had my feet in the water when I was still in diapers. Must be those city people who never saw an ocean, thought it was a lake.
I blame Ron DeSantis for this.

Very sad, may the victims rest in peace. ❤ I hope Floridians realize that their state could invest more in protecting its citizens with public services, like hiring enough lifeguards but instead has chosen to spend their tax dollars fighting there self declared culture war. Instead of paying lifeguards they’re paying lawyers to fight states biggest employer. Instead of hiring lifeguards they are trafficking migrants from TEXAS to CA (the WORLDS 5th largest economy) —the same migrants needed to harvest the crops that are now going to rot. Guess there’s just no money for lifeguards or interest in actually protecting families and kids.
I once got caught by the riptide when I was about 13 years old. It carried me about a 1/2 mile to 3/4 of a mile away from my family. I ended up at the private beaches of condos and bougie resorts lol.
The key really is to stay calm. My trick was I was swimming diagonally toward the shore the entire time so when that current really did finally ebb away some, I was able to swim to shore. Again, I was 13 years old. I was just so embarrassed lol. (I’m 35 now, and I realize I definitely could’ve drowned but I learned to swim at 4 years old so I was already experienced— I just didn’t realize I could drown regardless of experience level then.) I never said anything to my family, and I just played it cool. I didn’t go out into the water where I couldn’t touch the sand firmly beneath my feet again that day.
I really feel bad for the people who panic. Unless you’re a fish, you can’t swim against the current for healthy exercise. 😵
For humans it’s best to swim with the current diagonally and calmly—while foreseeing the best outcome. But the key really is to stay calm because you CANNOT fight the ocean’s strength! You’ve got to flow with it. 😊

Life guards have a hard job. My daughter wanted to be a life guard when she was a teenager, but the tryouts were too rigourous. You have to have strength and stamina. God bless them!
