I just learned of this horrible accident here on June 17th 2023.
I'm sorry the driver died. MY HEART IS HEAVY HERE IN ATLANTA FOR THIS PERSON'SĀ FAMILY,LOVED ONES,COWORKERS AND FRIENDS.
In our bridge collapse thankfully no motorists,first responders or pedestrians where killed.
A massive fire collapsedĀ Interstate 85Ā (I-85) bridge inĀ Atlanta, Georgia,on the evening of Thursday, March 30, 2017. After the 92-foot-long section collapsed, I-85 was closed to traffic for 43 days.Ā Three sections of northbound I-85 and three sections of southbound I-85 were replaced at a cost of $15 million; re-opening of the interstate was on May 12.
NTSBĀ report determined that theĀ Georgia Department of TransportationĀ contributed to the incident by unsafely storing materials under the bridge.
The fire started under the highway bridge, at a state-owned storage area which containedĀ high-density polyethyleneĀ (HDPE) andĀ fiberglassĀ tubing. The heat from the fire caused the collapse.
I remember many times seeing all the plastic material under the bridge.
It was miles of pvc piping 3 to 4 inches in diameter wound on huge metal spools. The plastic pipe was designed to be buried underground to allow wires to be ran through.
Sadly on this day our atmosphere was choked by very deadly toxic plums of smoke cascading from all the melting plastic.
