Conducts the Census (Census Bureau – required by the Constitution)
Issues patents and trademarks (Patent and Trademark Office – also per the Constitution)
Issues local weather alerts – tornadoes, storms, wildfires (National Weather Service)
Regulates exports (Office of Export Enforcement)
Regulates international trade (International Trade Administration)
Regulates the entire fishing industry (National Marine Fisheries Service)
Measures the GDP (Bureau of Economic Analysis)
Measures economic indicators – the nation's financial health (Economic Statistics Agency)
Regulates exports of dangerous substances (Office of Export Enforcement)
Enhances cybersecurity (National Institute of Standards and Technology)
Repository of scientific information (National Technical Information Service)
etc, etc, etc.
That's barely scratching the surface. People need to understand what agencies do before yelling "Duuuh, let's eliminate it". And I'm not saying that these agencies can't be looked at to eliminate waste or redundancy. But to say you're gonna eliminate the ENTIRE department is ridiculous, and would cause great harm to our country.
